The 110th Grey Cup, the Canadian Football League’s championship game, saw an incredible catch by former Ohio State Buckeyes’ wide receiver Austin Mack. Mack made 78 catches for 1,154 yards this regular season for the Montreal Alouettes, a team-high and fourth in the league (despite him only playing in 17 of Montreal’s 18 regular-season games), and he’s shone in the postseason too. And he showed up in a big way in the Grey Cup against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Sunday, making a remarkable one-handed catch after his one arm got tied up by defender Demerio Houston:
That’s just a remarkable catch from Mack under difficult circumstances. And it was a key one for the Alouettes. They were trailing 17-7 at this point early in the third quarter after being twice stuffed inside the one-yard line near the end of the first half. But this play to Mack set up a next-play touchdown pass to Cole Spieker, bringing Montreal within three points:
And that was possible thanks to Mack’s great catch. And he caught a go-ahead touchdown for the Alouettes later:
Mack is in only his first season in the CFL. That follows brief NFL stints with the New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, and San Francisco 49ers from 2020-22 and an Ohio State career from 2016-19. But he’s definitely made an impression so far, including on the league’s biggest stage.
