Pat McAfee sits on the ESPN College Gameday set prior to the NCAA football game between the Penn State Nittany Lions and the Ohio State Buckeyes at Beaver Stadium in University Park, Pa. on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024.

Although he is himself a member of the sports media sphere these days, former NFL punter Pat McAfee has made it clear over the years that he isn’t a fan of the industry writ large.

Which is why the words he had for professional golfer Rory McIlroy shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. McAfee told McIlroy the following on Wednesday’s episode of the Pat McAfee Show.

“I’m going to say this to Rory: Rory, I love everything you’re doing,” McAfee said, per Awful Announcing. “You walk up to the media and tell them to kiss your ass. You do whatever you need to do, buddy. It is great whenever you’re playing incredible golf. If you need to take some time, you need to take some time.”

McIlroy recently drew criticism from media members such as Scott Van PeltDan PatrickSteve Sands for failing to address the media after what was a less-than-ideal performance at the PGA Championship.

McAfee also drew on his leave of absence from covering the WWE.

“I just took some time, I am taking some time from WWE,” he said. “You mentally get to a place where you’re kind of exhausted and things like that.

“So if that’s what happened to Rory or if that’s going on with Rory or it was happening with Rory and he’s on the other side — Rory, we just want to let you know, we love when you’re golfing good. And I love that people hate you. I think that is a good thing for sport, not a bad thing for sport.”

It’ll be interesting to see if McIlroy heeds McAfee’s advice.
