The upcoming U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club will have some of the best golfers in the world on both LIV Golf and the PGA Tour competing for a major championship. But unfortunately, one former major winner was forced to withdraw from the highly anticipated event with an injury.
LIV Golf star Jon Rahm was forced to withdraw from the LIV Houston event this past weekend due to an infected sore in between his pinky toe.
Still, he made the trip to Pinehurst to test out the injury to see if it was something that would recover ahead of his Round 1 tee time on Thursday for the U.S. Open.
Unfortunately, it was determined by Rahm and his doctor that the injury wasn’t getting much better. This caused him to take to social media on Thursday to officially withdraw from the event.
“After consulting with numerous doctors and my team, I have decided it is best for my long-term health, to withdraw from this week’s US Open Championship,” wrote Rahm on X, formerly known as Twitter. “To say I’m disappointed is a massive understatement! I wish all my peers the best of luck and want to thank all of the USGA staff, volunteers, and community of Pinehurst for hosting and putting on what I’m sure will be an amazing championship! Hopefully I’ll be back in action sooner than later!”
This obviously has to be a crushing decision for Rahm to make, particularly because he was attempting to get things on the right track in what has been a rough stretch of golf as of late.
The 2021 U.S. Open winner is coming off of a missed cut at the PGA Championship last month and overall has not been playing up to his standards since joining LIV Golf.
The question for Rahm is where does he go from here? A potential merger between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf could be exactly what he needs to reclaim his status as the No. 1 player in the world.
But with that being said, Scottie Scheffler has been on an absolute tear as of late, winning five of his last seven tournaments played, including last week’s victory at The Memorial. So it could be easier said than done for Rahm to reclaim that status.
