The Cleveland Browns fired legendary former quarterback Bernie Koser hours before the team played the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2022-20223 season finale for both teams.
The Browns told Kosar this his services were “no longer needed.”
An NFL source, however, told Cleveland.com that the bet was connected to a $19,000 bet Kosar placed on the Browns against the Pittsburgh Steelers in their Week 17 clash.
“Bernie Kosar bet $19K on the Browns … as the first sports bet in Ohio. He’s donating the money to charity if he wins today,” The Bernie Kosar Show with Hanford Dixon said.
That move reportedly angered the Browns, who reacted before the game was even close to being finished. “Steelers Game Day yet once again I was informed by the Browns that my services are no longer desired or needed. I will not be doing today’s radio program. I am shocked & disappointed. Brown and Orange is my life…” Kosar tweeted after receiving the news.
Kosar was born in Youngstown, Ohio, about an hour southwest of Cleveland along the Pennsylvania border. Koser played collegiately with the Miami Hurricanes.
The Cleveland Browns selected Kosar with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1985 NFL Supplemental draft. He retired from football in 1996 after a three-year stint with the Miami Dolphins.
