Here on The Comeback, we enjoy nothing more than to bring you the latest from the world of sports and pop culture, with our own unique spin on that. We’ve also delved into the world of food recently, and not just when food and sports intersect.
McDonald’s is rolling out all day breakfast across the country, which means Egg McMuffins and McGriddles at 8 AM, 8 PM or when you’re stumbling out of the club drunk at 3 AM. It is rare however that individual franchise owners create their own breakfast menu items, but that’s just what one Columbus, Ohio franchise owner did.
Brian Mortellaro owns eight McDonald’s stores around Columbus, and he’s created something special: the Chicken McGriddle. What is that? A fried chicken patty between two McGriddle pancake buns. Seems like the perfect competition for Burger King hot dogs. He explained the idea to the Columbus Business Journal.
“Filet-o-fish, Big Mac – both of those started with owner-operators,” Mortellaro told me. “We took this idea up the chain and they’re letting us try it out.”

“It’s a chicken-and-waffles taste,” Mortellaro said. “I just think that’s something that isn’t out there right now.”
He’s forgotten about Waffle House, which has plenty of locations near Columbus, but Waffle House doesn’t have drive-thru.
This new franken-creation will be available at 11 locations around Columbus until March 27, priced at $1.49 or $2 depending on the location. If the denizens of Central Ohio like it, there could be a larger roll out later this year beyond Columbus. If this strikes your fancy, better get there fast.
But Mortellaro did not answer the most important question of all… is the Chicken McGriddle a sandwich?
