Vanderbilt fans ride the goal post in the south end of the field after the Commodores beat the #1 team in the nation, the Alabama Crimson Tide, 40-35 at Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024.

On Saturday, the Vanderbilt Commodores shocked everyone with their upset victory over the No. 1 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. And shortly after the final second ticked off the clock, Vanderbilt fans celebrated the once-in-a-lifetime win with a fitting celebration.

Alabama came into the game favored on most sportsbooks by 23.5. But on the back of an excellent game from senior quarterback Diego Pavia and an equally impressive rushing attack, Vanderbilt outdueled Alabama in a 40-35 shootout.

To put how unlikely the victory was for Vanderbilt into perspective, the program had never won a game against a No. 1 ranked team. In fact, their program record against teams ranked inside the top-5 was 0-60 coming into the game.

Vanderbilt also hadn’t beaten Alabama since 1984. But that all changed on Saturday, which was celebrated by Vanderbilt fans storming the field and ultimately tearing down the goalpost.

This was nowhere near the end of the party for Vanderbilt fans. The mob of fans on the field proceeded to take the detached goalpost from FirstBank Stadium to downtown Nashville, which is about a 45-minute walk.

Prior to Saturday night, Nashville wasn’t exactly considered to be much of a college football town. So imagine what those in town visiting must have thought when they saw a mob of likely drunk college kids carrying a college regulation goalpost down Broadway Street…

Downtown Nashville wasn’t even the final destination for the goalpost, as the fans carrying it ended up tossing it into the Cumberland River.

Often thought of as the runt of the SEC in athletics, Vanderbilt fans finally got a chance to realize what it is like to truly be a high-level SEC college football program. And by the looks of things, the Vandy faithful absolutely made the most of the historic night.
