Former Ohio State Buckeyes head coach had an impeccable undefeated record against the Buckeyes’ archrivals, the Michigan Wolverines. However, Meyer’s successor, Ryan Day, has lost his last four games against the physical Wolverines.
The legitimacy of some of those Michigan victories was thrown into question after allegations during the 2023 season of the Wolverines employing an elaborate and illegal advanced scouting scheme, allowing them to know which plays their opponents would run.
On Friday, the Wolverines were given their official sanctions by the NCAA.
“Among Michigan’s punishments in the NCAA COI ruling, per me and (Dan Wetzel): *Michigan receives a significant fine, expected to be more than $20 million, from loss of postseason football revenue for the next two seasons. *Michigan coach Sherrone Moore is given an additional game suspension, which is expected take place in 2026. The school already proposed a self-imposed a two-game ban for this upcoming season, which is slated for Week 3 and 4,” reported ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
Now, Meyer is weighing in on the sanctions, which most fans found as not being nearly severe enough.
“In December of 2011, I had to stand in front of a group of seniors and tell them they were not allowed to play in a bowl or championship game in their final year of college football for something they had nothing to do with,” Meyer said, according to Awful Announcing. “It was one of the most difficult things I have ever done. That same group went 12-0 and was unable to compete for the national championship.
“The recent ruling to not punish players who weren’t involved is correct. However, this decision also proves that the NCAA, as an enforcement arm, no longer exists.”
It’ll be interesting to see if Meyer ends up being right about the NCAA’s ability to enforce sanctions.
