You never know quite what will happen at a college football game, and Saturday night’s game between the Texas State Bobcats and Nevada Wolf Pack was no different.
Colton McWilliams of the San Marcos Daily Record tweeted during the game that a Texas State band member was removed from the stadium after throwing a trident at Nevada players.
That’s right, a trident.
You may be wondering where a band member would get a trident, which is a fair question. Not only was it a trident. It was Nevada’s own Turnover Trident!
Ironically, San Marcos is hosting its annual Mermaid Festival this weekend, so it was originally unclear if the trident was brought into the stadium from that or if it was already there.
There were plenty of jokes on social media, but the most common one referenced Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy, in which Brick Tamland (Steve Carell) throws a trident at a man during a street fight.
Many were left desperate for more information, such as college football writer Spencer Hall.
The No Context College Football account, like so many of the rest of us, want pictures or videos of the incident
Another user nailed it when they said, “Sure the NFL has the better actual football, but does it have this?”
There were plenty of other great jokes, as well.
