TCU leapfrogged into the college football landscape in 2022 with a dynamite season. The Horned Frogs are readying to face the undefeated Michigan Wolverines in the 2023 College Football Playoff Semifinal on New Year’s Eve. Head coach Sonny Dykes has his team prepared, but Dykes stepped away from the CFP discussion this week. Instead, Dykes wanted to talk about the SEC.
The SEC, of course, has been the preeminent conference in college football for well over a decade. Since 2007, the conference has housed 11 National Championships. So by any measure, they will be a lightning rod for everyone. Dykes decided to trash the conference for its nonconference scheduling tactics.
On3 Sports’ Twitter account posted, “TCU head coach Sonny Dykes had some words for the SEC!” followed by a graphic. The graphic featured a quote from Dykes, which read, “We don’t have the good fortune to play an out-of-conference game as the SEC does in Week 10 or Week 11. You’re not going to catch The Citadel in Week 10. We caught Texas.”
Dykes isn’t the first head coach or college football voice to bring up these issues. The SEC has generally scheduled “cupcakes” prior to rivalry week, where they play teams from the Southern Conference, among others. Other conferences don’t practice that behavior. So the conference, or those in or around it, can’t act surprised when someone takes a swipe.
