For the past few days, Deion Sanders and his sons Shilo and Shedeur have been in the news because of comments they made about some former Colorado Buffaloes who discussed what the atmosphere was like under Sanders in an article by “The Athletic.”
Most of the comments primarily focused on Sanders treating certain players better than others.
Rather than ignore the article, Sanders and his sons took to social media to air their grievances and make fun of some of the former players, which to many wasn’t a great look for the program.
One of those calling them out is Stephen A. Smith who called out both of the younger Sanders for their actions.
“And I say this respectfully to Shilo and Shedeur, two ballers: you’re Deion Sanders’ sons,” Smith started by saying, “That means I will, you will always have my support because I love your daddy like a brother. But it is important that you understand how you’re communicating and how you’re coming across. Your dad has earned it. They’re young, Shedeur and Shilo. I get it. They’re protective of their daddy. I get it. But somebody needs to tell them that, moving forward, as you communicate in defense of your dad and what he’s doing, how you communicate and how you come across matters.”
Smith is concerned about how this will look to the rest of the world especially how this will reflect on them.
“You represent him and you represent the program. And moreso Shedeur than Shilo, I’m going to remind you again, you did this (motions to wristwatch) every time you won. But you lost more than you won. What were you doing when you lost?” he continued.
Many college football fans were not pleased by their behavior, especially of the Colorado head coach who many felt needed to tone down the rhetoric on social media and act more like an adult. The issue that many of the ex-players have is that it seems as if Sanders showed favoritism to the newcomers to his team over the players who stayed.
It also appears in interviews that he is more focused on getting his two sons to the NFL and Travis Hunter. Sanders has said in past interviews there were only certain teams he wanted them to play for, an accusation he now denies.
But many are questioning now if these latest incidents will hurt these player’s chances of going high in the NFL Draft next year. Sanders doesn’t think so, but who knows? Sanders says his priority is Colorado football and won’t be following his sons to the NFL next year.
That remains to be seen. But the diva-like attitudes of the coach and his sons is not a good look for him or them. Character has become a major issue in the NFL and even though the two have never been in trouble, being labeled as a “diva” by NFL scouts reflects poorly not only on the young players but their father/head coach as well and it’s time they recognize the damage they are doing to themselves.
