If you’re going to break the rules, you might as well do it right. South Carolina’s football team didn’t do that during Saturday night’s game against North Carolina.
After the Tar Heels’ defense forced a punt on the game’s opening possession, the offense went to work. North Carolina quickly moved down the field and found itself facing a third-and-goal from the one-yard line. Before the third down play, South Carolina called time out to regroup. When the teams retook the field, there were two problems with the Gamecocks.
One, despite coming out of a time-out, South Carolina had too many men on the field for the third down play. And this wasn’t simply a matter of two guys not quite not being able to get off of the field before the ball was snapped. The defense lined up in formation with 13 guys. Two, despite being outnumbered, North Carolina still scored on the play.
The Gamecocks having too many on the field coming out of a time-out and still allowing a touchdown is something a lot of college football fans found funny.
Too many men penalty coming out of a timeout is bad. Giving up a TD with 13 men on the field is worse.

It had to be a nice confidence boost for the North Carolina offense. For the South Carolina defense, there’s some work to be done.
