The college football world was hit with some sudden tragic news this week as the Mississippi State athletic program announced on Wednesday that freshman football player Samuel Westmoreland has died suddenly at the young age of 19.
Westmoreland was an offensive lineman on the Mississippi State Bulldogs football team and an industrial technology major. Mississippi State head coach Mike Leach had some heartfelt words after Westmoreland’s passing.
“The Mississippi State Athletics Family is heartbroken by the sudden death of Sam Westmoreland,” Leach said in a statement on Wednesday. “Sam was a beloved son, brother and teammate, and a tremendous young man with a limitless future. He will always be remembered and deeply missed by everyone who knew and loved him. The entire MSU Family mourns as our thoughts and prayers go out to the Westmoreland family. Our highest priority is the support of the Westmoreland family and our student-athletes during this troubling time.”
It was absolutely tragic news, and the college football world took to Twitter to mourn Westmoreland’s passing on Wednesday.
