Ohio State named its Week 1 starter on Tuesday. Head coach Ryan Day announced that Kyle McCord, a former four-star recruit from the Class of 2021, will get the nod vs. Indiana.

This is a long time coming for McCord, who’s been committed to Ohio State since April 2019. He didn’t get much of a chance to shine with C.J. Stroud around, obviously, since Stroud is now playing professionally for the Houston Texans, which has since opened the door for McCord to get the keys finally. The former Philadelphia native will see his first significant action in an opening Big Ten showdown between the Buckeyes and Hoosiers.
McCord and the Buckeyes have sky-high expectations again. Ohio State is one of the most talented teams in the nation once again, and as a result, they stand as one of the title contenders. But to get back to the College Football Playoff, they will likely have to assure themselves one thing: Beating Michigan. The Buckeyes have failed to defeat their hated rivals in each of the last two seasons. After Michigan stomped them in 2021 at the Big House in Ann Arbor, they once again ran roughshod in 2022. This time in Columbus.
So when it comes to how much success McCord will have under center, he will largely be judged by how he performs in late November in Michigan.
He also follows a host of other talented quarterbacks in Columbus for the last decade. Stroud, Braxton Miller, Cardale Jones, J.T. Barrett, and Dwayne Haskins are just some of the big names who’ve started for the Buckeyes. There’s a long line of pedigree there and a lot to live up to. Hopefully, for McCord’s sake, he gets through all of it and performs well.
The CFB world had plenty to say after the big Ohio State football news broke.
If Kyle plays well and gets Ryan Day a new contract, his nickname will be Extension McCord. https://t.co/02IU0hv1VP
