A major name has emerged for the open offensive coordinator job at Notre Dame. Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich has reportedly entered his name in the discussion.
According to Grace Remington of 247Sports, Leftwich recently sought out Fighting Irish head coach Marcus Freeman out. Remington tweeted, “Byron Leftwich reached out to Notre Dame about the OC position last week, per source. He and Marcus Freeman have stayed in contact as Leftwich remains a serious candidate for the job.”
Former NFL coach Bruce Arians hired Leftwich as an intern back in 2016. Leftwich quickly rose to quarterbacks coach under Arians and left with him when he went to Tampa Bay. Leftwich was the offensive coordinator for the Buccaneers the year they won the Super Bowl over Patrick Mahomes. His name quickly shot up the rankings after that, but unevenness on offense ultimately led to his dismissal.
In fairness to him, the head coach that hired him wasn’t so happy about that move.
A return to the college ranks for Byron Leftwich will certainly invoke some memories. Leftwich was an extremely accomplished quarterback at Marshall. He won the MAC Player of the Year award twice, but his most memorable moment came on the field. It’s perhaps so memorable that I don’t even have to tell you what happened.
The Notre Dame offense is in need of a serious boost. Tommy Rees recently left the job for the Alabama position, a move not so well-liked in the Fighting Irish fraternity.
