Under the current college football spring practice system, teams across the country typically conclude their spring practice with some sort of intrasquad scrimmage, often inviting fans to watch the action as part of an annual spring exhibition game. But Auburn Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze has a plan to change that system, and it sounds like he has the support of Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban.

This spring, Hugh Freeze proposed the idea of bigger schools hosting a smaller, local in-state university for the annual spring game. This would allow players on both sides to get real reps against a different opponent and would allow the smaller school some exposure and competition that they wouldn’t otherwise get. And it sounds like Nick Saban would be interested.

“We’re always interested in helping people in any way that we can. If that’s the purpose of what they’re doing, that’s certainly a good thing,” Saban said about Freeze’s idea, according to On3. “We try to do a lot of things to create opportunities for people in our foundation and will continue to do that. If there’s something along those lines in the spring game that would be helpful to somebody, I think it’s a great idea.”

We’ll have to see if this plan is ever actually put into action.
