A beloved member of the Michigan family passed away Friday.
Dametrius “Meechie” Walker passed away after a two-year battle with a rare type of bone cancer. Walker was a former football recruit who doctors diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2020.
The Michigan program brought Walker, a native of the state, on several times over the last two years as a guest of the program. He was beloved by virtually everyone in and around the program. He was most prominently featured on College Gameday in a touching story done on him.
On Muskegon, the Twitter account from the high school Walker once attended, tweeted the news of the tragic death on Friday. They wrote, “It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we share that Dametrius ‘Meechie’ Walker has passed away after a courageous fight with osteosarcoma. Thank you for all your support. Please continue to send prayers and positive vibes to his family during this time.”
Several have already mourned the devastating loss. Scott DeCamp, a Michigan-area reporter, tweeted his condolences. “Utterly heartbroken about the loss of Meechie. From the time I met him when he was a freshman at Muskegon High to the last time we saw each other, he always had that infectious smile and love for everybody. Your memory will live on in my heart, my friend.”

RIP Meechie Walker. The FOX piece this fall on him and his connection to Michigan had me literally sobbing. Such a tragic story, but I’m thrilled Meechie got the chance to live out his dream before his life was snatched away from him far too soon. Prayers up to the Walker family. pic.twitter.com/4kdS2pir8n

He was such a pleasure to briefly cover at the onset of my career. Always positive & always had time for everyone. Great job by Michigan for helping him make the memory pictured above. Condolences to his family, friends, & community.
