The Kansas Jayhawks scored one of the biggest victories in school history Saturday, stunning No. 6 Oklahoma 38-33 in Lawrence.
In the process, Kansas dealt Oklahoma’s national championship hopes a huge blow.
The Jayhawks were in big trouble with about a minute remaining. They trailed and had the ball at midfield, facing a 4th-and-6. But Jason Bean hit a wide-open Lawrence Arnold, who raced 37 yards to take the ball down inside the 10.
Devin Neal punched in an easy touchdown run from nine yards out one play later as the Sooners opted to let Kansas score so they could get the ball back.
But Oklahoma ran out of time on their possession, picking up their first loss of the season. And the celebration in Lawrence began. KU fans stormed the field and destroyed some perfectly good goalposts, tearing them down and dumping them in nearby Potter Lake.
If it seems like it’s been a while since Kansas topped Oklahoma, it has been — 26 years, to be exact. Fox Sports’ RJ Young pointed out the other incredible streaks this game snapped for Kansas.
While Jayhawks fans are elated, many Sooners faithful were pointing fingers on social media. And meme-makers had a field day, too.
Not gonna lie, this upset hit me in my feels a little bit. Kansas has been wanting a win like this since they hired @CoachLeipold. He & the entire Kansas football program & fanbase earned their right to beat Oklahoma today pic.twitter.com/XSJm374dkf
