The college football world was thrilled to learn that former Miami Hurricanes and Baltimore Ravens star Ed Reed would be the next head football coach at Bethune-Cookman. However, Reed is already apologizing for some unfortunate comments he made last week about the school.
Reed recently did an Instagram Live chat in which he chastised the school and its staff over trash that he and his team were picking up. He also slammed the school for not preparing his office before he arrived.
“I’m waking out here with the football team picking up trash. I should leave, I’m not even under contract yet,” said Reed. These MFs didn’t even clean my office when I got here.”
On Monday, Reed issued his apology, saying that his comments were “unacceptable.”
“I(n) regards to my social media and comments about the University, staff and other institutions, I would like to sincerely apologize to all BCU staff, students and alumni for my lack of professionalism,” Reed said, via HBCU GameDay. “My language and tone were unacceptable as a father, coach, and leader. My passion for our culture, betterment, and bringing our foundation up got the best of me and I fell victim while engaging with antagonists on social media as well. I am fully aware of the hard-working folks at our school who are also fighting to make things better and more financially sound. I am encouraged from my communication with my AD and our administration and understand it’s a work in progress. My passion is about getting and doing better and that goes for me, too.”
Reed is following in the footsteps of Deion Sanders, another high-profile former NFL player who took over an HBCU program. Sanders is now the head coach at Colorado. We’ll see how things work out for Reed at Bethune-Cookman, though he’s off to a rough start.
