Former Stanford Cardinals head coach David Shaw has been away from coaching since stepping down from that position in 2022. But his has reemerged in a coaching search at the NFL level.
The Las Vegas Raiders parted ways with head coach Josh McDaniels earlier this season. Interim head coach Antonio Pierce has done a solid job of keeping the team afloat. But there is certainly no guarantee that Pierce will be the long-term solution as head coach for Las Vegas.
Rumblings have emerged that Shaw could be a name to watch in the Raiders coaching search.
“Hearing a name to keep an eye on when the Raiders go through HC search process: Former Stanford HC (and former Raiders assistant coach) David Shaw,” tweeted Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
As Bonsignore illuded to, Shaw does have a history with the Raiders organization. He served as an assistant within the organization for three years when the team was in Oakland from 1998-2000.
Shaw certainly has a solid resume at the collegiate level. During his tenure as the head coach at Stanford, Shaw was named the Pac-12 Coach of the Year four times (2011, 2012, 2015, 2017).
That being said, he isn’t exactly someone who has a proven track record at the NFL level, especially as of late. He hasn’t coached at the NFL level since 2006.
At the very least, Shaw is an intriguing name in the Raiders coaching search. But there will surely be a ton of other names in the mix for the position as we get closer to the end of the season.
