Colin Cowherd questions why USC still plays Notre Dame

The USC Trojans and Notre Dame Fighting Irish have faced each other in football for nearly 100 years. It is a tradition to see these two rivals face each other every year and normally it’s a good matchup.

But in this day and age of college football, is it necessary? That’s the question Colin Cowherd had for his viewers on his show Tuesday.

In the changing climate of college football, why do these two need to play? Cowherd’s argument is the game is no longer needed and hurts their chances of one or the other from winning a national championship.

“Why do they have to keep playing Notre Dame? Colin, the history oh give me a break,” he said. “College football punted on history last year.” He pointed out how college football has forgotten West Coast football, which forced the hand of several Pac-12 teams, including the Trojans.

Cowherd also said that USC shouldn’t play the Fighting Irish unless they join the Big Ten which USC will be a part of this coming season. Besides Notre Dame whom they face every year, they will also face the likes of Michigan, Ohio State Penn State, Wisconsin, and up-and-coming UCLA at the end of the year.

Add on the LSU Tigers to begin the season and you can see Cowherd’s argument.

“I’m punting Notre Dame out of respect for Notre Dame,” he said. It will be interesting to see in the future if either school decides to back out of this game in the future.
