During his opening remarks of SEC Media Days, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey mentioned that the conference isn’t looking to expand, saying 16 teams are right where the conference wants to be.
With realignment seemingly constantly bubbling under the surface, many have wondered if the SEC would add Florida State. The Seminoles are currently embroiled in a lawsuit with the ACC over media rights, among other things.
According to Action Network’s Brett McMurphy on Tuesday, not only does the SEC not want Florida State, but the Big Ten also would be unlikely to add the Seminoles, barring the ACC’s collapse.
“Florida State and Clemson, if they get out and the ACC stays intact, the Big Ten and SEC do not want them. I can’t get any simpler than that,” McMurphy said on The Next Round.
“I talked to over a dozen people, university presidents, conference personnel, consultants. They all said the same thing. They do not want Florida State or Clemson,” he added.
Why don’t the conferences want the Seminoles, though? McMurphy explained that, as well.
“It doesn’t make sense financially to bring them in. The Big Ten got Oregon and Washington for fifty cents on the dollar to join USC and UCLA. Florida State doesn’t add anything for them… They also don’t view Florida State as someone they can trust. They’re a destructive force,” McMurphy noted.
