It looks like the Arizona State Sun Devils could be staying home this postseason as the team is reportedly set to self-impose a bowl ban this year.
According to a report from college football insider Pete Thamel of ESPN, the Arizona State Sun Devils are set to self-impose the punishment as a result of alleged rules violations under the leadership of former head coach Herm Edwards.
“Sources: Arizona State is expected to self-impose a one-year bowl ban for the 2023 football season. The decision stems from the ongoing NCAA investigation for alleged violations that occurred under former coach Herm Edwards,” Thamel wrote in a tweet on Sunday.
“The investigation stems in part from a dossier of documents sent to the NCAA on May 31 of 2021 detailing repeated and gratuitous recruiting violations, including multiple instances of ignoring restrictions implemented during COVID-19 recruiting dead period,” Thamel said in a follow-up tweet. “The Notice of Allegations in the case has not yet been sent out. ASU’s decision to self-impose is essentially an acknowledgement of the preponderance of evidence.”
It’s certainly bad news for Arizona State players, coaches, and fans, but it’s also a sign that the program is trying to move on from the controversy.
