The Purdue Boilermakers suffered an all-time horrible loss on Friday against Fairleigh Dickenson in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. It was clearly a devastating loss that crushed the hopes of a potential National Championship. It also puts the future of star center Zach Edey into question.
Edey is likely to win National Player of the Year after an absolutely dominant season at Purdue, averaging 22.3 points per game along with 12.9 rebounds per game.
He is set to have one more year of eligibility to play at Purdue. However, he may use his excellent season to transition into his professional career.
Edey discussed his time at Purdue after the loss Friday night, saying that as much as he wants to return to Purdue he will ultimately make “the best decision” for his future.
“I want to come back and I want to go to war with them, but at the end of the day I have to make the best decision for me,” Edey told Sam King of The Indianapolis Star. “I have no idea how long my career is going to last.”
Despite the obviously disappointing early exit in the NCAA Tournament, he added that he would love to return to Purdue if money wasn’t a factor.
“If there was no money involved, I would come back to Purdue in a heartbeat,” Edey added. “It’d be a no-brainer. This is my favorite locker room I’ve ever been in.”
Emotions were obviously running high when he answered these questions. He will likely consider all his options much clearer in the coming months.
Regardless, it appears very clear that Zach Edey has a lot to consider regarding his basketball career moving forward.
