Texas makes big coaching move

The Texas Longhorns let down the rabid fanbase with a short run in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. And this seemingly led to some drastic changes that were made to the program on Sunday that will undoubtedly shape its future.

Texas head coach Rodney Terry has been the head coach of the Longhorns for the last three seasons, most notably leading the Longhorns to the Elite Eight in 2023, his first year at the program.

Since then, the program has been on a slight decline, notably making it to the NCAA Tournament each of the last two years, but not making it past the first weekend. This year, they didn’t even make it past the First Four, losing to Xavier in the opening round.

Some may see consistent NCAA Tournament appearances as a positive for Terry. But Texas seemingly views things differently, potentially viewing this as a ceiling on what Terry can do at the program.

As a result, the Longhorns announced on Sunday that Terry has been relieved of his duties, first reported by ESPN college basketball insider Jeff Borzello.

This obviously raised the question as to who would be the man to replace Terry and lead the Longhorns for the foreseeable future.

Well, it didn’t take too long for Texas to name Terry’s replacement. According to Cedric Golden of the Austin American-Statesman, Sean Miller will be accepting the now-vacant Texas head coaching gig.

This move is particularly interesting because Miller is actually the one who sent Terry and Texas home this season, coaching at Xavier for the last three seasons. Prior to this, Miller coached at the University of Arizona, leading the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament seven times during his tenure.

Clearly, Texas brasses liked what they saw from Miller in their First Four defeat to him. So it will certainly be interesting to see how Miller is able to do in Texas in the 2025-26 season.
