Saturday night’s men’s basketball game between New Mexico State and the University of New Mexico has been canceled due to a murder investigation involving one of the basketball players involved in tonight’s game.

A newspaper in New Mexico has confirmed that a New Mexico State basketball player was involved in the incident. Authorities with knowledge of the situation say one person was shot to death early Saturday morning near a student residence hall on the University of New Mexico campus.

Albuquerque Police Department said they responded to a call at 3 a.m. “One individual has succumbed to gunshot injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene,” said Officer Chase Jewell, who is an APD spokesman.

Although the school and the police alerted students to the incident, they didn’t say it was an active shooter situation like it was in Virginia earlier this week.

This is the third violent incident on a college campus this week. The University of Virginia is still dealing with the devastating loss of three of its football players who were shot by a former teammate.

The University of Idaho had four students stabbed to death and now this murder that has taken place on the University of New Mexico campus, the second this week that a sports athletic program has been touched by violence.
