A college basketball program just suspended their newest head coach as of two days ago!
McNeese suspended head coach Will Wade on Tuesday for the first five games of the 2023-24 season according to Matthew Travis of KPLC 7 Sports in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
The program’s suspension for Wade comes a mere two days after they announced that they hired the former LSU Tigers coach.
According to KPLC, “The self-imposed suspension and restrictions appear to be a move by McNeese to get ahead of possible NCAA penalties or sanctions lobbied upon Wade from his time at LSU.”
Timing is everything in the world but it doesn’t get much funnier than this. The program rolled out the red carpet for Wade. They had him do his introductory press conference, and the team’s Twitter account persistently posted about him. And now, two days later, they’ve suspended him.
Justifiable as it is, it’s still pretty hysterical.
Many reacted to the move after McNeese made it.
“In case it wasn’t clear this was absurd,” college basketball writer Dana O’Neil wrote.
Josh Verlin tweeted, “If part of your contract of hiring someone is that you immediately have to suspend them for five games, maybe that person wasn’t such a great hire?”

Brian Rauf asked if Wade was the first coach to be suspended before they ever coached a game for that school.

Zac Jackson suggested they sign Jacoby Brissett for the “awkward waiting period.” Wow.
