Mackenzie Mgbako, a Top 10 high school basketball recruit in the Class of 2023, made his commitment decision on Friday. After decommitting from Duke, Mgbako announced that he will attend the University of Indiana.
Mgbako’s announcement was reported by various outlets. 247Sports’ Dushawn London tweeted, “Mackenzie Mgbako, the No. 10 overall prospect in the class of 2023 and a former Duke signee, has committed to the Indiana Hoosiers.”
Mgbako namely chose the Hoosiers over the Louisville Cardinals and the Kansas Jayhawks. Kansas had been rumored to be in on him, but the 10th overall recruit in the 2023 class elected to head to IU instead.
The Hoosiers are on the heels of a successful season. IU went 23-12 and picked up a 4-seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. They were eventually eliminated by Miami (FL), who made the Final Four.
Indiana landed former five-star Kel’el Ware in the off-season via a transfer from Oregon. So the program under Mike Woodson is making some significant moves. The Hoosiers are one of the most prominent ‘names’ in the sport but haven’t won an NCAA Championship in decades. They last made the Final Four in 2002, when they finished as National Runner-Up to the Maryland Terrapins.
Woodson and Co. hope to build more inroads for success. 2022 was a great season for Indiana. Now they appear poised for bigger things in 2023 with one five-star recruit coming in and another former five-star player going to IU as well.
