Star WNBA rookie Cameron Brink sustained a torn ACL on Tuesday night. The Los Angeles Sparks star went down against the Connecticut Sun and, on Wednesday, learned of the dispiriting diagnosis and prognosis.
Brink is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024 WNBA season with her torn ACL. It’d been a promising start to Brink’s rookie career, so this news shook many WNBA fans nationwide.
The Sparks made the unfortunate announcement on X on Wednesday afternoon.
Disappointed fans flooded the replies and quotes with their displeasure over the news. Well-wishes were sent the former Stanford standout’s way in droves.
The 22-year-old averaged 7.5 points and 5.3 rebounds per game before injury. She’d been coming along well on a Sparks team that currently sits at a meager 4-11 on the year. The news of Brink’s injury puts the Sparks at a more significant disadvantage. They’ve already gotten off to a poor start, and losing one of their most promising players won’t help them anytime soon.
Brink is the latest in a long line of ACL injuries women’s athletes are suffering around the world. An epidemic has been plaguing women’s sports, from soccer to professional wrestling and basketball. It continues to extend its reach, and more will hopefully be done to protect the athletes. But, as we’ve learned over time, these injuries can happen to anybody in any situation.
