The Miami Marlins’ search for a new manager is over.
ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez reported Sunday the team was hiring Los Angeles Dodgers first base coach Clayton McCullough, citing sources.
Fresh off a World Series championship, this isn’t McCullough’s first attempt at a managerial position with the Marlins. He was part of the managerial search two years ago before they hired Skip Schumaker. He also interviewed for the Cleveland Guardians opening in 2023 before Stephen Vogt was automatically named the skipper.
In addition to being the Dodgers’ first base coach for the last four seasons, he managed at multiple minor-league levels in the Toronto Blue Jays organization. He also threw to two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani in 2023 during the Home Run Derby. Ohtani dubbed him one of his favorite coaches ever.
He’ll be with a familiar face with Marlins assistant general manager Gabe Kapler. The two worked alongside one another when Kapler was the director of player development with the Dodgers as McCullough served as the minor league field coordinator. A total of 10 years in the Dodgers organization for McCullough.
In September, the Marlins announced Schumaker would not be returning in 2025 after both parties voided their season option.
This was just two years after Schumaker was named NL Manager of the Year when he led a 93-win team. He complimented the relationship he had with former general manager Kim Ng before she parted ways with the team after the season.
