When the Creighton Bluejays moved to the Big East in 2013, the path to success wound up being much easier and quicker than many expected.

There are a handful of reasons for that, but no reason was bigger than the scoring dominance of Doug McDermott.

McDermott, the son of longtime Creighton head coach Greg McDermott, was an offensive force to be reckoned with for the Bluejays.

On Tuesday, Creighton announced plans to retire McDermott’s No. 3 jersey on December 20 prior to their game with the Villanova Wildcats.

McDermott was the unanimous College Player of the Year in 2014 after averaging 26.4 points and seven rebounds per game. He finished his career with 3,150 points, becoming just the eighth player in the history of the sport to score more than 3,000 career points.

McDermott has no shortage of career accolades in addition to being named National Player of the Year, as he also won the Missouri Valley Player of the Year twice when Creighton still played in that league before moving to the Big East where he was named Big East Player of the Year, making him one of the only players in college basketball history to win three conference player of the year awards in four seasons.’

Perhaps most impressively, McDermott scored 10+ points in 135 of the 145 career collegiate games he played, an NCAA record.
