Mike Greenberg made headlines on Wednesday after the ESPN personality revealed his NBA Finals MVP pick. While there was no surprise that Greeny’s pick came from the Boston Celtics, it’s who it is that got everyone’s attention.
Greenberg helped to herald the unheralded Jrue Holiday, who would be the longtime ESPN voice’s Finals MVP pick if the series had ended.
Greenberg delivered his pick and a well-thought-out rationale on Get Up Wednesday morning.
“If the NBA Finals had ended on Sunday night, my vote for MVP would have gone to Jrue Holiday,” Greenberg said.
Why is he his choice? Greenberg touted his versatility and playmaking abilities. He discouraged the idea that he was a traditional or stereotypical “role player” by saying the only way you can call him that is if his role is “anything his team needs on a given night to win.”
Greeny noted Holiday’s accomplishments in these Finals that no guard previously achieved. Holiday is having a historic NBA Finals, Greenberg argued, and that’s why he should be Finals MVP.
“If that guy’s a role player, he’s the best one the league has seen in a very long time,” Greenberg said to close his argument.
The ESPN personality made a pretty compelling argument. The NBA world had much to say about it.

Today is Jrue Holiday’s birthday and he’s in the running for FMVP. Mavs might lose by 25 tonight https://t.co/50OUh5Jb2O
