Andre Dawson wants to change something about his Hall of Fame induction.
His cap.
The eight-time All-Star was inducted into Cooperstown in 2010 while sporting a Montreal Expos hat, but he explained he preferred he wear a Chicago Cubs cap on the prestigious plaque.
“I just felt my preference all along was as a Cub, despite playing (11) years in Montreal,” he told The Chicago Tribune. “I had my reasons, and I think that should’ve been something we sat down and discussed.”
The hat each individual sports is one of those unsung big deals, especially someone of Dawson’s caliber.
Across his illustrious 21-year career, Dawson spent 11 of them with the Expos and six with the Cubs. He earned his sole MVP honor with Chicago in 1987 when he had an MLB-leading 49 home runs and 137 RBI, slashing .287/.328/.568.
“I was one of the more popular players in Montreal, but I wouldn’t consider myself an organizational icon or the most popular … When push came to shove and I became a free agent, I think it was handled poorly, and in a sense, I was really forced out. The change of scenery in Chicago rejuvenated me because of how warmly I was received,” Dawson said.
